Emergency Roof Repairs in Plymouth

Storm damage, sudden leaks and slipped slates after a gale. We make it safe and watertight first, then come back and repair it properly.

If water is coming in now, phone rather than email. Tell us what you can see from the ground, whether anything has come off the roof, and whether there is anything below that needs moving. Do not go up to look yourself — more people are hurt checking storm damage than by the storm.

What happens when we arrive

  • Make safe first. Loose or hanging slates come down before they fall on someone. If the roof cannot be worked on safely in the conditions, we secure the area and say so.
  • Temporary weatherproofing. Sheeting or a temporary cover to stop water getting in while the weather is still against us.
  • Find the actual entry point. Once it is safe, we trace where the water is really coming in rather than sealing the first hole we see.
  • A written quote for the permanent repair. No pressure to commit while you are standing in a wet hallway.

The Met Office counts a gale as a mean wind speed of 34 knots or more sustained over ten consecutive minutes. Plymouth records around 16 such days a year, compared with about 7 at Yeovilton in Somerset and 4 at Long Ashton near Bristol. In the 1990 Burns Day storm, gusts of 84 to 85 knots were recorded at Plymouth.

What counts as an emergency

Water actively entering the building. Slates or ridge tiles that have come loose and could fall. A section of flat roof that has lifted. Damage after a gale that has left the roof open. Anything else — a stain that has been there a while, a gutter that overflows in heavy rain — is better handled as a normal booked visit, and usually costs you less attention and disruption.

After the storm

If you have lost slates in a blow, it is worth having the whole slope looked at rather than replacing the two that moved. On older nailed roofs, wind rarely takes out the only weak fixing. Related: roof repairs, re-roofing.
